Our First Year 1953
That First
Day in 1953 as told by Betty Schleicher
It was a summer's day in June 1953, not unlike the wonderful June days
we all still experience on the lake. There was a small group of neighbors
coming together to share each other's company and catch up on the latest news
much like we all still do today. This group's discussions, however, had a
new purpose--formulating plans to create a yacht club for North Lake. After
considering the possibility at the Schleicher's residence, they adjourned
to Marv Luebke's garage to formalize their plans.
Picture, if you will, Bob Dryburgh, Bruce Klein, Elmer Klumb, Marv Luebke,
and George Schleicher sitting around a table, trying to decide the purpose
of the club, its membership requirements, and what it might take to formally
create the club. One thing was certain, however. They knew the main goal of
the club should be to unite and promote sailing and camaraderie of the residents
of the lake. A vote was taken and it was decided that Marv Luebke would be
the first Commodore and Bob Dryburgh would assume the duties of Vice-Commodore.
As we now look out at the lake, seeing the many piers docking a flotilla of boats, it's hard to believe that back in 1954 there were only three pontoon boats on the lake. They were owned by the Irgens', Hoffman's and Schleicher's, with George Schleicher building his and the Hoffman's pontoon boat. Some things are very different for us now, but some things have also remained the same.
Thanks to these five people who decided to form a club on a summer's day in 1953, we have a growing and active yacht club. We still gather together to visit, exchange news and try to imagine what our club will be in the future.
We would like to thank Betty Schleicher, the oldest charter member of the North Lake Yacht Club, for sharing her memories of that very first Yacht Club meeting. While George Schleicher, Elmer Klumb, and Marv Luebke are no longer with us, Bob Dryburgh and Bruce Klein continue to be honorary members. We are grateful for their foresight and dedication.
